Colorless Polyimides: Properties, Applications, and Emerging Trends
Polyimides serve as key materials in a broad range of applications, such as substrate materials, transparent films, cover layers, semiconductor materials, insulating materials, high-frequency materials, and photosensitive materials. Depending on specific application requirements, polyimides can be engineered to retain their inherent high performance while delivering enhanced or specialized functionalities. As a result, they are widely used in consumer electronics, automotive components, aerospace systems, and defense technologies.

With increasing concerns over the environmental and health impacts of certain chemical monomers, solvents, and catalysts, research efforts are now focused on developing next-generation polyimides. These innovations aim to reduce toxicity and environmental impact by avoiding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), incorporating bio-based materials, and utilizing alternative solvent systems—while maintaining high performance.
In contrast to conventional yellow polyimide films, colorless polyimide (CPI) films offer high optical transparency along with excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, flexibility, and mechanical strength. CPI films are widely used in flexible display applications, with the flexible copper-clad laminate (FCCL) sector also experiencing significant growth. The increasing demand for foldable smartphones, laptops, and tablets is a key driver behind this trend.
Thanks to their optical transparency and mechanical robustness, CPI films are emerging as promising materials for solar cells, flexible displays, and various optoelectronic devices. Recent advances in molecular design and processing technologies have enabled a better balance between thermal stability, mechanical strength, and optical transparency, while also improving long-term durability. These developments extend the service life of CPI films and further expand their adoption in high-tech applications.
